Project Background
Chindata’s Greater Beijing Huailai Headquarters Campus in Huailai, Hebei, is a key data center facility within the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei hub of China’s “East Data, West Computing” initiative. IT and cooling equipment account for most data center energy consumption, with cooling offering significant opportunities for efficiency improvements.
Pilot Scope
Following preliminary assessments and discussions, Data Center Building 1 at Chindata’s headquarters campus was selected for the initial pilot. The building has two air conditioning systems serving Zones A and B. The Zone A cooling plant comprises four cooling units, while Zone B has five.
Key Challenges Before the Upgrade
Annual average PUE exceeded 1.23, leaving room for further cooling efficiency improvements.
Precision air conditioning accounted for a significant share of energy consumption and required more precise control.
Cooling strategies did not adequately adapt to changes in rack occupancy.
System-Wide Intelligent Energy Optimization
Deepctrls developed high-precision performance models to maximize overall system efficiency. The solution coordinates chiller sequencing, chilled-water pumps, cooling-water pumps, cooling towers, precision air conditioning, and cooling mode transitions to improve efficiency across both central and terminal cooling systems.
Projected Energy Savings
The central air conditioning system is expected to save approximately 2.497 million kWh and RMB 1.7 million annually. Precision air conditioning is projected to save approximately 1.743 million kWh and RMB 1.185 million annually.
Combined, the two systems are expected to deliver annual savings of approximately 4.24 million kWh and RMB 2.885 million.
Operational Safeguards
The project incorporates multiple safeguards covering variable-frequency drive limits, controller power loss, threshold settings, startup protection, emergency stop recommendations, and recovery after power outages. Equipment anomaly diagnostics and safety strategies further support stable operation throughout the optimization process.
